في سابقة صادمة أعادت الجدل حول أمن المدارس الأمريكية، قضت محكمة في ولاية فيرجينيا بمنح المعلمة آبي زويرنر تعويضًا قدره 10 ملايين دولار بعد أن أطلق عليها تلميذ يبلغ من العمر ست سنوات النار داخل صفها الدراسي مطلع عام 2023.
الحادثة التي وقعت في مدرسة ابتدائية بمدينة نيوبورت نيوز، أسفرت عن إصابة المعلمة في يدها وصدرها، ونُقلت إلى المستشفى حيث مكثت أسبوعين.
وذكرت المعلمة زويرنر (28 عامًا) في شهادتها أمام المحكمة أنها «اعتقدت للحظة أنها ستموت»، بعد أن تجاهلت إدارة المدرسة تحذيرات سابقة من إمكانية حمل الطفل لسلاح ناري.
ورفعت زويرنر دعوى ضد مساعدة مدير المدرسة إيبوني باركر متهمةً إياها بالإهمال الجسيم، إذ تجاهلت إنذارات متكررة من طلاب ومعلمين بشأن السلاح الذي كان بحوزة الطفل. وكانت المعلمة قد طالبت بتعويض يبلغ 40 مليون دولار قبل أن تُصدر المحكمة حكمها النهائي بتعويض قدره 10 ملايين دولار.
في المقابل، حكم القضاء على والدة الطفل بالسجن نحو أربع سنوات بتهم تتعلق بالإهمال وحيازة الأسلحة، بينما لم تُوجّه أي تهم للطفل نظرًا لصغر سنه.
وتُعد هذه الحادثة واحدة من أندر وقائع إطلاق النار داخل المدارس الأمريكية من أطفال دون سن العاشرة، إذ تشير قاعدة بيانات جمعها الباحث ديفيد ريدمان إلى وقوع نحو 15 حادثة مشابهة فقط منذ سبعينات القرن الماضي.
In a shocking precedent that reignited the debate over the safety of American schools, a court in Virginia awarded teacher Abby Zwerner $10 million after she was shot by a six-year-old student inside her classroom in early 2023.
The incident, which took place at an elementary school in Newport News, resulted in the teacher being injured in her hand and chest, and she was taken to the hospital where she stayed for two weeks.
Teacher Zwerner (28 years old) testified in court that she "thought for a moment she was going to die," after the school administration ignored previous warnings about the possibility of the child carrying a firearm.
Zwerner filed a lawsuit against the school's assistant principal, Ebony Parker, accusing her of gross negligence for ignoring repeated alerts from students and teachers regarding the weapon that the child possessed. The teacher had initially sought $40 million in damages before the court issued its final ruling of $10 million.
In contrast, the court sentenced the child's mother to nearly four years in prison on charges related to neglect and weapon possession, while no charges were filed against the child due to his young age.
This incident is considered one of the rare occurrences of school shootings in the U.S. involving children under the age of ten, as a database compiled by researcher David Ridman indicates that there have been only about 15 similar incidents since the 1970s.
